to my home!
As I
was showing new subdivisions the
other day, a client said
to me, "You must really love your own home not to be tempted to buy a
new house every year." Without any hesitation, I answered, "Yes,
I really do love my home."
Don't
get me wrong - my home is
a far cry from those
decorated model homes with their huge kitchens, closets and
baths! I live in a 1968 ranch on a quiet tree lined street.
It's surrounded by big oak trees and old azalea
bushes. I purchased it from the original owner, who rocked her
babies on the screened porch. Big dog
prints cross the end of my driveway, made right after it was
poured over
35 years ago. Nobody knows whose dog did it, but I think of him
every time I go to the mailbox!
Sometimes confused with
the north Fulton community by the same name,
Gwinnett's Mountain Park is in what was once
called the Garner District of Gwinnett County. There's no
real "town center" but most would say that the crossroads is Five Forks
Trickum and Rockbridge Road. Most Mountain Park residents
have Lilburn mailing addresses (although I still occasionally get Rural
Route mail), but a good many have Stone Mountain addresses.
In the afternoon,
the neighborhood library and Mountain Park Park (yes, that's really
it's name) playgrounds are full. Folks play tag football on the
green, while others jog or stroll or wall their dogs on the walking
trail. After dinner, the neighborhood Breuster's (ours is
surrounded by trees) is crowded with families, sitting on their cars or
just standing around, eating their ice cream cones. Visit the Gwinnett
County Government site for a link to more information about
Mountain Park Park.
Right down the road is the neighborhood Ace Hardware,
where I go when I really need someone to HELP me! There are
churches (Mountain Park Baptist and Mountain Park Methodist), small
businesses, and some of the best schools in Georgia (Parkview High
School and Mountain Park Elementary). Gregg's Nursery is around
the corner
Across from the library is one of the many charming older
houses in Mountain Park (the owner doesn't know
that I painted a watercolor of
this house and it hangs over my bed). The scarecrow in the
adjacent lot is dressed for every occasion, and he always gives me my
first smile of the day! I've been wanting to
keep a photographic history of Mr. Scarecrow, but many seasons have
gone by, and I haven't done it. He's always a Parkview football
player in the fall, Uncle Sam for the 4th of July, and, you can
see his Easter portrait here!
The new Mountain Park Aquatic
Center just
opened on
Rockbridge Road near Five Forks Trickum, and is really humming
already. Here is a link to detailed information about classes and
fees: Gwinnett
County Aquatic Centers If the link doesn't work,
you may call 770-564-4650 for
information. We have a great view of Stone Mountain from the hills,
and if we really listen, we can hear Elvis sing at the end of the Laser
Show!
